Imelda Contreras had been running her own alterations business in Texas for 32 years before she opened Imelda’s Designer Alterations in Napa seven years ago. “I came (to the United States) for vacation in 1976 then I stayed because I got married,” she explains, having grown up in Chihuahua, Mexico and later raising two American-born sons who are now adults.

Contreras started her business “without a penny,” doing a few alterations from her home. Now, Imelda’s Designer Alterations offers clothing alterations for men and women, in addition to other types of household sewing needs: cushions, curtains, you name it. As satisfied friends and customers continue to recommend Imelda’s Designer Alterations to others Contreras is given more motivation to continue to move her business forward, and continue to grow her clientele base.

As if 39 years of experience running her own businesses wasn’t already impressive, it is surely worth noting that Contreras has been sewing her own clothing since the age of 12, having learned the skill from her mother. Being a famous designer had always been a dream of hers; in fact, she mentions the soap opera character “Simplemente Maria,” a small-town girl who then became a famous fashion designer, as another early source of inspiration to pursue fashion design.

Contreras wants to encourage young people to follow their passions, even if it means taking risks. “Anyone can do it, regardless of your origin,” she proudly assures. She wishes to express her gratitude towards those who come and view the exhibition, and is happy to know that people are interested in promoting and celebrating the Napa Valley’s rich, diverse Latino heritage.

Imelda Contreras estuvo llevando su propio negocio de arreglos en Texas durante 32 años antes de abrir Imelda’s Designer Alterations en Napa hace siete años. “Vine (a los Estados Unidos) por vacaciones en 1976 y después me quedé porque me casé,” explica, habiendo crecido en Chihuahua, México y después de haber criado dos hijos nacidos estadounidenses que son ahora adultos.

Contreras empezó su negocio “sin un centavo,” haciendo unos pocos arreglos desde su casa. Ahora, Imelda’s Designer Alterations ofrece arreglos de ropa para hombres y mujeres, además de otros tipos de necesidades de costura doméstica: cojines, cortinas, de todo. El hecho de que amigos y clientes satisfechos continúen recomendando Imelda’s Designer Alterations a otros, le da a Contreras más motivación para continuar progresando con su negocio, y hacer crecer su clientela.

Como si 39 años de experiencia llevando sus propios negocios no fuera ya impresionante, cabe resaltar que Contreras ha estado cosiendo su propia ropa desde la edad de doce años, habiendo aprendido la habilidad de su madre. Ser una diseñadora famosa siempre fue su sueño; de hecho, ella menciona al personaje de la telenovela “Simplemente Maria,” una chica de un pueblo pequeño que después se convierte en una famosa diseñadora de moda, como una fuente temprana de inspiración a perseguir el diseño de moda.

Contreras quiere animar a la gente joven a seguir sus pasiones, aunque eso signifique correr riesgos. “Todo el mundo lo puede hacer, independientemente de su origen,” asegura orgullosamente. Ella desea expresar su gratitud hacia aquellos que vienen y ven la exhibición, y es feliz al saber que la gente está interesada en promocionar y celebrar la rica y diversa tradición latina del Valle de Napa.
